Thirsty Thursday: The Phoenix

This Week’s Thirsty Thursday cocktail is a whiskey based drink.  I’m always a fan of a good bourbon.  One of my favorite local restaurants in Phoenix, The Gladly, has an amazing bourbon list on their menu, and they serve them with ice balls made with sashimi grade ice!  I had no idea that even existed! I love to try new bourbons when I go to The Gladly, and occasionally I use them in cocktail recipes!

I don’t like to get too crazy with ingredients in a whiskey cocktail because I think the flavor of the bourbon should be the highlight of the drink, so this cocktail adds a little extra sweetness and depth to the whiskey but the flavor shines through!  I will say that this is probably a whiskey lovers type of cocktail, so if you don’t like bourbon you may not love it, but if you like it, give it a try!

Ingredients

2 ounces of quality bourbon; Crown Royal has a new rye bourbon that tastes great with this drink

  • 2-3 orange slices
  • A few dashes of bitters
  • Honey (optional)-honey will add a little extra sweetness

Instructions

  1. Muddle the orange in a highball glass. Add a few dashes of bitter, and if desired, a small amount of honey. If I use honey I usually only use about 1/4 tsp or so. Mix the ingredients with a spoon, then add ice and bourbon and serve with an orange zest, if desired.
