If you happen to be traveling to Monterey, California… The Portola Hotel is MY choice of accomodations while visiting. Why? Well, I’m glad you asked!
*Disclaimer – I recieved a reduced media rate in exchange for an honest review of the Portola Hotel. All opinions expressed are my own.
Location: The Portola is located right on the waterfront at Fishermans Warf and it is a very easy 10 minute stroll along the paved trail down to Cannery Row. Also within a few blocks is Restaurant 1833, which I HIGHLY recommend to anybody in the area for an excellent evening of food! The Convention Center happens to be located right next door as well which is super convienient for those attending events.
Rooms: The romms are updated and very nicely done. I seriously did not want to get out of my bed, it was soooo comfy! Especially since I am a Mom traveling without kiddos or hubby in tow. It was so wonderful to enjoy my quiet time in that room! I was however, drawn out of bed and greeted quickly with a fresh cup of coffee from the in room Keurig Coffee Machine. Delish!
Overall, my experience in the room was very quiet except, Saturday night, there was a Jazz Festival at the Convention Center. My room happen to face the courtyard where when doors were opened, I could hear the band playing. No voices, just music. That in itselft wasn’t an entirely bad thing since I happen to enjoy the Jazz, but some may not have been too excited about it.
Hotel: The lobby is very spacious and has a restaurant and bar located at the far end so it’s a great meeting place. There is a pool and spa as well, unfortunately, I did not have time to enjoy those luxuries… next time! Leaving from the Hotel, there are also a few fun tours you can arrange if you have time. The Monterey Ghost Tour and the Wine Trolley. Next trip, I’m definitely fitting in the Wine Trolley!!
Staff: Everyone I communicated with from start to finish was very helpful, friendly and accomodating. This means from speaking with managers before my arrival, the valets, the reception desk and even the maid service. Not a single person was without a smile and full of help. This above all else leaves the best impression on me. I hold quality service above all else when choosing my stay.
What you need to know:
- Parking is available in the garage for a nightly fee. I chose to self park for $14 night. You may opt for Valet for a little bit more. This is pretty typical for city hotels and find the parking fee reasonable.
- Wifi: Internet connection is NOT free. 24 hour wifi fees start at $9.95 for x/data. The business center also is not compliementary. Upon inquiry, I was told the area outside the bar has access. However, there happen to be a private event that evening and I could not sit in front of the bar. I contacted the manager and was given a complimentary code to use. Just be warned, if you are planning on a lot of internet usage, be careful as your bill can add up quickly. If internet is a must, I would recommend calling ahead and discussing the fees before you arrive.
Overall, I think the Portola was a wonderful experience and would not hesitate to stay again. I found the rates to be very good and competitive with other hotels in the area. Check it out for yourself and let me know what you think!
