Cantaloupes are part of the Cucurbitaceae family which includes melons, squash, pumpkins, cucumbers and gourds. Another name for these fruits are “muskmelons”.
These melons are high in Vitamin A and Vitamin C.
Select melons that smell sweet, have smooth skin over a netting appearance. The stem scar should be smooth and slightly sticky and the opposite side or blossom end should give slightly to pressure.
Store whole muskmelons in a cool, dry place. Wash the outside of a cantaloupe before cutting. These melons touch the ground which makes them susceptible to bacteria.
Once cut, store unused portions in the refrigerator.
