Not long ago, I shared with you how I was transitioning my senior age dog to the Purina Pro Plan Bright Mind food for small dogs that I picked up from my local PetSmart.  It’s been a whole month since we started feeding her the new food and keeping tabs on how she has been reacting to the switch.  The big question is, can the enhanced botanical oils found in the Pro Plan help our dog relearn her old tricks?

The food is designed to help promote alertness and mental sharpness. I first thought it might be hard to gauge if the food was really making a difference but within 30 days, I noticed some pretty obvious changes.  They might not be obvious to just anyone, but for me, just a few small things were a big deal for us and Brittney.

For starters, she seems to be a bit more engaged with the family when we go outside.  For example she typically would just lay at my feet outside or stay inside, but lately she wants to get back out with the kids and play, doing her “old tricks” for her treats (pieces of her food).  She also is back to running over the couch when I go upstairs rather than walking around the back.  Perhaps the biggest difference I noticed is when we left town for a long weekend.  Normally she has a bit of separation anxiety if I had to call it anything.  She would get upset and not eat, but not this last time.  She seemed to accept and acknowledge that we were gone and her “grandma” was coming to feed her.  She ate her food and when we returned was much more relaxed.  I truly think she was able to deal with the changes and realize we would be coming back and this was a “normal” thing that happens from time to time.

I would never have thought that switching food could make such an impact for our older dog.  Even if it’s small changes, it’s huge for your pet! With roughly 87 million dogs in the U.S. and an estimated 44 percent of them are seven years and older (senior), a new food like Purina Pro Plan Bright Mind is so exciting.
