Summer is quickly coming to an end up here in Washington State. That means prepping for the insane chaos of readjusting to busy mornings and even busier afternoons. I don’t know about you but I need simple grab and go breakfasts and simple after school snacks to feed the kids and the rest of the entourage that shows up to “study.”
For this I turn to Walmart. I love to hit up the freezer aisle and stock up on Jimmy Dean® and State Fair® for our favorite easy fixes. Since often the kids need to be able to fix their own breakfasts and snacks, we always opt for super simple solutions.
To kick off this year we are all about food on a stick that is easy to cook in the microwave in only one minute that can go from point A to B if needed or can be paired with other food for a sit down meal.
Our morning routine is quite hectic with one going to middle school, one off to elementary an hour later with grandma and my hubby and I both running off to work. We often share only 5 minutes together before we head off in our own direction. Typically this 5 minutes is filled with quick breakfast fixes while packing lunches and backpacks. Even though it’s a whirlwind, it’s such a great time with everyone pitching in. One of us grabs the Jimmy Dean® Pancakes & Sausage on a Stick and gets them cooking in the microwave while another rounds up shoes and backpacks, and yet another gets the lunches and coffee. Then we grab and go with breakfast in hand or if we are lucky enough, we find a few extra minutes for a quick sit down!
When the busy day is done, once again everyone converges back home, often with a few extra friends in tow. Since the kids do extracurricular activities as well, the time spent at home after school sometimes is short before they have to head out again and many times, we don’t arrive home from work until minutes before we have to leave.
In this case, we once again do that little dance we do in the kitchen but with State Fair® Classic Corn Dogs. Everyone loves them and they are so easy to cook and go with some fruit and water on the way to practice to keep them moving through all the way to homework and bedtime.
While to those on the outside, our lifestyle might seem crazy. We could plan ahead and pack meals, set out our gear for the day, etc…. but we enjoy this fun time working together and supporting one another. At the end of the day, learning to roll with the flow and getting the job done as a team is worth the rush. It teaches us to deal with those little life stresses in a “can do” attitude and that we are always there for each other to lean on in times of need.
I simply love the fact my kids can be almost self sufficient at their age and not need me to do everything for them. These easy to prepare foods are definitely key in growing their independence.
