Tip of the Day: How to Open a Jar with a Rubber Band

How to Open a Jar with a Rubber Band

I was at my mother’s house this past weekend and my mother shared this great trick with me.   She had a jar of pickles that she couldn’t open, and she wrapped a thick rubber band around the jar top and opened it easily.  I am quite sure that a lot of you out there already knew this trick, but in case I am not the only one who didn’t, I just had to share how to open a jar with a rubber band!

To do this all you need is a thick/wide rubber band and a difficult to open jar.  Wrap the rubber band around the jar lid as many times as it takes to get it tight and open the jar.  This works by giving you a better grip on the jar top.  In fact, it works just as well, if not better than, those jar openers we used to call “rubber husbands,” and chances are, you already have plenty of rubber bands laying around the house.

  1. Joan says:

The very best ones for this are those purple ones that are around asparagus and other produce. They are thicker, wider, stronger, and smaller around. They will fit almost any jar without having to wrap it more than once, and they are about the width of the edge of the jar lid. So next time don’t cut these off and throw them away. Save them for opening jars.

  2. Never heard of this trick! I have tons of problems opening jars lately and usually use the back end of a can opener. Will try this the next time. Thanks Michelle!
